“A true American eccentric.” –The New York Times
I’m a writer and an exec at a digital news organization. I’ve written for Newsweek, the New York Post, The American Interest, National Review, and The Washington Times, and my book, Sex & God at Yale, was a New York Times Editor’s Choice pick.
That’s the day job. But no day is really complete without time at my well-loved ’68 Steinway. Music has always been in my blood — from church choirs to countless nightclub gigs back when my hair was a lot longer. I even wrote a song that ended up on the soundtrack of a Brazilian blockbuster. I never saw a dime in royalties and never even watched the film, but if I ever write an autobiography, it’s getting titled I Was Big in Brazil.
I was raised partly in Gordon County, Georgia — the moonshine capital of America — and got from there to here by way of South Florida, LA, New England, New York, and Nashville. Somewhere along the way I picked up a minor addiction to real estate investing, and I may be turning into a fitness junkie. Time will tell.
This site is where I park my various creative projects. Thanks for stopping by. Wherever you’re reading from, I hope this finds you well and at peace. —NH
I made a living for a while as something of a lounge singer, with a rabid elderly fan base. Over the years I’ve also made records with friends who deserve the credit for anything good you hear — especially my pal Justin Weaver.
These days I’m writing (mostly country) songs in my spare time under the name Tennessee Song Machine. I also wrote about making music with AI for RealClearBooks & Culture — read the essay and hear the track it produced below.
